Nylon strings on open-back banjo give a mellow “plunky” sound. I’m experimenting with nylon or ersatz-gut strings (Nylgut) on a couple of 5-string banjos. Open-back banjo players often try to approximate the vintage sound of the old pre-steel-strings recordings, and I’m just beginning to fool around with it.These sound good, and approach the sound I’m looking for.
